The United States has informed Israel that it plans to escalate its strikes on Iran in the coming days, including the use of heavy bombers for the first time since this year’s joint American-Israeli campaign against the Islamic Republic, Israel’s Kan public broadcaster reported on July 22.
According to the report, the bombers are expected to target the Pickaxe Mountain, based on repeated threats by U..S President Donald Trump over the past week that the area would be hit “pretty soon.”
Pickaxe Mountain is the nickname analysts have given to Kolang Gaz La, a mountain located just east of Iran’s Natanz nuclear complex in Isfahan province, believed to house a deeply buried tunnel network built to protect nuclear infrastructure from potential strikes.
The close security coordination is reportedly intended to allow Israel to prepare for the possibility that Iran could respond to the intensified U.S. strikes by escalating its own attacks, including launching missiles at Israel.
The report came right after Trump threatened to bomb Iranian bridges and power plants if the Islamic Republic continues striking ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Responding to these threats, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the Islamic Republic will respond in kind to any attack on its infrastructure.
“Our defense doctrine is clear: eye for an eye. Any aggression against Iran, including our infrastructure, will compel a powerful and decisive response,” Araghchi wrote on X.
In addition, Iran’s state broadcaster quoted the military as saying that U.S. threats “will have no result other than the expansion of the war.”
All in all, the coming days will likely witness a major escalation, possibly enough to propel the entire region into a full-on war.
Iran will strike back very hard if Trump follows through with his threats, and Israel is guaranteed to join the fighting, possibly along with some Gulf states.
