U.S. Launches More Strikes Against Yemen As Ship Hit By Houthis Sinks In Red Sea

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on June 19 that its forces destroyed more drones of the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen.

In a statement, the command said that eight drones were destroyed in a Houthi controlled area of Yemen. Another drone was intercepted over the Gulf of Aden, according to the command, which noted that there were no injuries or damage reported by U.S., coalition, or merchant vessels.

“It was determined these systems presented an imminent threat to U.S., coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region,” CENTCOM said. “These actions were taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels.”

CENTCOM announcement came after the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a detachment of the Royal Navy, reported that the Tutor, a Liberian flagged, Greek owned and operated bulk cargo carrier that was struck by the Houthis, had sunk in the Red Sea.

One crew member, who was reportedly in the Tutor’s engine room when it was struck by missiles and an uncrewed suicide boat on June 12, remains missing.

“Military authorities report maritime debris and oil sighted in the [Tutor’s] last reported location,” UKMTO said in a security update.

The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the UK in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea since November in response to the Israeli war and siege on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.

In addition, the group launched dozens of drones and missiles at the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat and shot down six American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.

Since January, U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen in an attempt to deter the group, but to no avail.
