The United States Central Command announced on August 17 that its forces destroyed an unmanned surface vessel (USV) of the Yemeni Houthis (Ansar Allah) in the Red Sea a day earlier.
The USV presented “a clear and imminent threat to U.S. and coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region,” the command said in a statement.
“This action was taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels,” it added.
Yemeni media, including the Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV, didn’t report any U.S. strikes on Yemen on August 16. This suggests that the USV was targeted far away from Yemen’s Red Sea coast. It is possible that the vessel was on its way to carry out an attack.
Over the last nine months, the Houthis targeted dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in response to the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.
Additionally, seven American-made combat drones were also shot down by Houthi air defenses over Yemen and nearby waters.
During the same period, the group, which is backed by Iran, also launched from Yemen more than 220 ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and suicide drones at Israel, mostly toward the Red Sea port city of Eilat in the south, according to the Israeli military.
The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January in an attempt to deter the group and degrade its military capabilities, but to no avail.
Israel also launched an attack against al-Hodeidah port last month after a deadly Houthi drone strike on the city of Tel Aviv, but was met with more threats by the group.

and ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. for nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. all these are the beginning of sorrows.
