United States President Joe Biden said on November 27 that Washington and other mediators will jumpstart efforts to reach a ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip that removes the Hamas Movement from power while freeing Israeli hostages held captive in the Palestinian enclave for over a year.
“Over the coming days, the U.S. will make another push with Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, Israel, and others to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza with the hostages released and an end to the war without Hamas in power,” Biden said in a tweet from his official X account.
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan later told MSNBC that Biden will begin work on a possible ceasefire as early as today.
Biden’s call for a ceasefire in Gaza came less than a day after a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon came into effect.
Hamas indicated on November 26 that it was ready for a ceasefire in Gaza as its key ally Hezbollah was preparing to halt operations against Israel.
“We have informed mediators in Egypt, Qatar and Turkey that Hamas is ready for a ceasefire agreement and a serious deal to exchange prisoners,” a senior Hamas official told the AFP news agency, at the same time accusing Israel of obstructing an agreement.
Israeli officials had speculated that a key achievement of the Lebanon ceasefire was to break the linkage between the two fronts.
Meanwhile, another senior Hamas official tried to play down the effects of Hezbollah signing up to a separate ceasefire agreement. .
“Hamas appreciates the right of Lebanon and Hezbollah to reach an agreement that protects the people of Lebanon and we hope that this agreement will pave the way to reaching an agreement that ends the war of genocide against our people in Gaza,” Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters.
Abu Zuhri blamed previous failures to reach a ceasefire deal that would end the Gaza war on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“Hamas showed high flexibility to reach an agreement and it is still committed to that position and is interested in reaching an agreement that ends the war in Gaza,” Abu Zuhri said.
“The problem was always with Netanyahu who has always escaped from reaching an agreement,” he added.
The Israeli war on Gaza has so far claimed the lives of more than 44,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children. Today, Israeli troops occupy vast parts of the Strip, including the so-called Natsarim Corridor in its center and the Philadelphi Corridor on the border with Egypt.
The ceasefire in Lebanon will without a doubt increase pressure on Hamas. Still, the group, which launched its surprise attack on Israel on October 7 of last year alone, will not likely let down any of its main demands, including the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons.
