The United Kingdom Defence Secretary has halted the airdropping of British aid into the Gaza Strip following an incident where a package with a faulty parachute resulted in the deaths of several Palestinians last week, The Telegraph reported on March 13.
Five civilians, including two children, were killed in the aid airdrop mishap, which took place in al-Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza on March 8.
According to The Telegraph, Shapps expressed concerns regarding the safety of parachuting aid into the Strip after the deadly incident.
Sources close to the Defence Secretary were cited by the news outlet as saying that the decision was motivated by concerns for safety, revealing that the UK had developed plans for constructing a new sea pier in Gaza to establish a more efficient route for delivering essential supplies to the Strip.
The plan to deliver aid to Gaza via the sea was first announced by the U.S., which has also been air dropping aid into the Strip.
Palestinians in Gaza are facing dire shortages of food, water and medicine. At least 27 people, including children, have already died from starvation in the Strip as Israel continues to delay the entry of much-needed aid.
Israel tightened its siege on Gaza following the outbreak of the war on October 7 with the Hamas-led surprise attack on nearby Israeli bases and settlements.
The humanitarian crisis is only adding to the suffering of Palestinians in the Strip. Since the start of the war, Israeli military operations have claimed the lives of 31,341 people and wounded more than 73,134 others, according to a statement released by the Hamas-run health ministry on March 14.
“At least 69 people were killed and 110 others injured in Israeli attacks in the last 24 hours,” the statement said, adding: “Many people are still trapped under the rubble and on roads as rescuers are unable to reach them.”
The U.S., UK and other allies of Israel are yet to make any real efforts to pressure the Israeli leadership into accepting a temporary or a permanent ceasefire. These plans to deliver aid to the Strip are more about covering their support for the war and their direct role in it. Even their aid has now killed Palestinians.
