On December 20, the Russian military secured a settlement close to the city of Myrnohrad in Donetsk, squeezing the remaining Ukrainian pockets of resistance there, all while securing a new part of the city of Huliaipole in Zaporozhye.
The Tsentr [Center] Group of Forces captured Svetloye, which is located right to the northwest of Myrnohrad. The capture of the settlement caused more pressure on Ukrainian troops besieged in the northern part of the city. Other smaller pockets are still present in the southwest and southeast of Myrnohrad. However, Russian troops are taking them down one by one.
The fate of Myrnohrad will likely be sealed before the end of the year. Ukrainian troops there could make a breakout attempt, but their chances of succeeding are very slim as the Tsentr Group of Forces is now in full country of all roads out of the city.
With the capture of the city nearing, the Tsentr Group of Forces is already preparing to resume advance towards its next target, Dobropillia. The city is a key logistics and command hub for Kiev forces.
Russian troops secured Nikanorovka in full, and are reported to be advancing from Vladimirovka and Pankovka towards Novoshakhovo and Shakhtar.

Meanwhile in Huliaipole, the Vostok [East] Group of Forces continue to expand its control in the city amid a collapse in Ukrainian defenses.
Russian troops made additional gains in the city center, especially along Tsvetnaya Street where high-rise buildings were captured. Progress by the troops was also reported in the northern part of the city, mainly on the left bank of the Haichur River.
Intense Russian air and artillery strikes continue to hit Ukrainian positions inside Huliaipole, as well as to the north, along the Haichur.
Taking into account the latest gains, the Vostok Group of Forces now control more than half of the city. Kiev forces are deploying reinforcements, but the morale of their troops are low, and it is very likely that the battle there will end with a Russian victory within a few weeks.

All in all, Ukraine appears well on its way towards a defeat in Myrnohrad, and another in Huliaipole. The only way for Kiev may be a political solution. Militarily speaking, the situation of Kiev forces will only get worse with time from here on.
