Ukraine has exhausted all its stocks of American-made ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles, the Associated Press reported on March 12, citing American officials.
“Officials have acknowledged that Kiev no longer has long-range missiles of the Army Tactical missile system [ATACMS],” the news agency says.
According to an American official, the United States has supplied less than 40 such missiles, which Kiev ran out of at the end of January.
Kiev forces first deployed the ATACMS in October of 2023. At the time, Ukraine received a limited number of ATACMS missiles from the U.S. However, the missiles were of the older M39 Block I version, which has a range of 165 kilometers. This version is armed with a cluster warhead with 950 M74 bomblets. This batch was quickly used within a few weeks.
Last April, Kiev forces resumed attacks with ATACMS missiles after receiving a batch made up of around a hundred units in secret from the U.S. These missiles were however of a newer version with a longer-range.
It is still unclear what was the version supplied to Ukraine. The U.S. might have supplied the M39A1 Block I which is armed with a cluster warhead with 300 M74 bomblets but has a range of 300 kilometers, or with the M48 QRU and M57 Block IA Unitary versions which are both armed with WAU-23/B unitary warheads and have a range of 270 and 300 kilometers respectively.
The ATACMS was not very successful, with Russian air defenses intercepting drones and completely foiling multiple attacks.
Kiev forces launched a number of ATACMS missiles at Sevastopol last July. Submunitions from the missiles’ cluster warheads hit a crowded beach, killing four civilians and injuring more than 150 others. Russia said that the U.S. was complicit in the bloody attack.
Later in August, Russian air defenses foiled an attack with a dozen ATACMS on the Crimean bridge. All missiles were intercepted. No casualties or damage was reported.
On March 11, White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz announced after talks with the Ukrainian delegation in Saudi Arabia that the United States would resume aid transfers to Ukraine. The joint declaration following the meeting also states that Ukraine has expressed its readiness for a 30-day ceasefire. It is unclear however if Kiev forces will again receive ATACMS missiles.
