On February 23, the Russian military’s Vostok [East] Group of Forces foiled three advance attempts by Kiev forces close to the Haichur River in Zaporizhzhia, as the Ukrainian counterattack in the region began to lose momentum.
The 95th Rifle Division was responsible for two of the advance attempts. Two assault groups from the division, backed by two armored personnel carriers (APC), attempted to advance to the south of Kolomitsy. Three other assault groups in five vehicles, including two APCs, attempted to advance near Novoalexandrovka.
The other advance attempt was made by the 82nd Guards Rifle Division, which sent two assault groups in two APCs towards Andreevka.
The advance attempts were detected early on by the reconnaissance units of the Vostok Group of forces, and were quickly targeted.
Five Ukrainian APCs and two platoons of troops were reportedly neutralized, while the remaining forces retreated back to their original positions.
In its daily briefing, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that Ukraine lost up to 355 troops, 11 motor vehicles, and four field artillery guns, in addition to the five APCs.
Ukraine launched the counterattack near the Haichur earlier this month after bringing large reinforcements, including several assault formations and foreign mercenary groups to Zaporizhzhia. In recent days, the counterattack began to lose momentum.
Despite failing to capture any key settlement and suffering heavy losses, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently boasted about imposing control of 300 square kilometers in Zaporizhzhia. The number was rejected by Russian media, and has not yet been verified by any independent side.
“You can’t say that we’re losing the war. Honestly, we’re definitely not losing it, definitely. The question is whether we will win,” Zelensky told AFP journalists at the presidential palace in the Ukrainian capital on February 20
“That is the question — but it’s a very costly question,” he added.
Zelenskyy’s latest remarks indicate that despite the lack of results, Kiev forces are likely to press on with the counterattack in Zaporizhzhia. The mounting losses could bring Ukrainian defenses in the region to the brink of collapse by spring, when the Vostok Group of Forces will likely launch their own offensive.
