US and Russia Meet on Cybersecurity in Geneva

Senior cybersecurity officials from the U.S. and Russia are holding meetings on cybersecurity. The consultations are held in Geneva on April 21-22.

U.S. officials say that Russia and U.S. are renewing efforts to prevent themselves from getting into a cyber war “by mistake”.

However, the Geneva consultations don’t mean the resumption of activity of a workgroup on cyber security appended with the Bilateral Presidential Commission. The activities of the Russian-American commission for cooperation were frozen in 2014 by Washington in the wake of contradictions with Russia over the situation in Ukraine.

Russian media report [SF editor: citing anonymous diplomatic sources] that the meeting would focus exactly on international aspects of information security. The issues related to the UN and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) are expected to be discussed, rather than some specific episodes of struggle with cyber crime.

The sides are due to discuss the bilateral cybersecurity confidence-building agreement signed in 2013.
