The US-led coalition and its proxy, the Revolutionary Commando Army (MaT), have held another joint live-fire exercise at their garrison in the southeastern Syrian area of al-Tanf.
On July 28, the MaT released a video of what it called a “routine mentorship and training exercise,” which saw its fighters firing heavy machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars side by side with coalition personnel.
In a statement posted on Twitter, the US-led coalition’s Combined Special Operation Joint Task Force renewed its commitment to the mission in al-Tanf.
“Coalition Forces remain committed to the advice, assist and enable mission, allowing our partner forces to keep SIS defeated and ensure safety and security in the region,” the statement reads.
Around 200 US troops and some 300 militants of the MaT are usually present at the garrison, which was established in 2016 to counter ISIS. The US-led coalition maintains a 55 kilometers no-fly zone around the garrison.
In mid-July, The commander of the US Central Command General Michael “Erik” Kurilla has paid a surprise visit to al-Tanf, where he met with commanders and fighters from the MaT. During the visit, Kurilla inspected a compound that was targeted by the Russian Aerospace Forces in June.
Contrary to their claims, the US-led coalition and the MaT have been doing nothing to counter ISIS in al-Tanf. The terrorist group is reportedly active near garrison. Recently, both Russia and Syria accused the coalition of sheltering and training terrorists within the garrison’s 55-kilometer zone.
