The United States Central Command (CETCOM) announced on March 13 that the Houthis (Ansar Allah) fired a close-range ballistic missile from their areas in Yemen at the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Laboon in the Red Sea a day earlier.
The missile did not impact the U.S. Navy destroyer, the command said in a statement, noting that no injuries or damage were reported.
In the same statement, CETCOM announced that its forces and a coalition vessel successfully engaged and destroyed two drones which were launched from a Houthi-controlled area of Yemen.
“It was determined these weapons presented an imminent threat to merchant vessels and U.S. Navy ships,” the command said. “These actions are taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S. Navy and merchant vessels.”
The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have targeted dozens of Israel-affiliated vessels and others owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November 19 in response to the ongoing Israeli war and siege on the Palestinian Gaza Strip.
The attack attempt on USS Laboon, which is yet to be claimed by the Houthis, came just a day after the U.S. and the United Kingdom conducted 17 strikes against port cities and towns under the group’s control in western Yemen. A spokesperson for the internationally recognized Yemeni government said the strikes killed 11 people and injured 14 others.
Recent attempts by the U.S. and its allies to deter the Houthis with military force have clearly failed. Still, Washington appears to be determined to go on with its military campaign against the group.
