The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen announced on October 22 that they had attacked a military base near the central Israeli city of Tel Aviv in support of the “resistance” in the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
The base was targeted with “a Palestine-2 hypersonic ballistic missile,” Houthi military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Sarea said in a statement, noting that “the missile successfully reached its target, bypassing American and Israeli air defenses.”
“The Yemeni Armed Forces affirm that they will continue to carry out military operations against the Israeli enemy until the aggression and the siege on the Gaza Strip, as well as the aggression on Lebanon are over,” he added.
Hypersonic missiles travel and maneuver at least five times faster than the speed of sound at low altitudes in the atmosphere which makes them extremely difficult to track and intercept.
The Palestine-2 is a two-stage solid fuel missile that was first unveiled and used by the Houthis in an attack against Israel in mid-September. The group claims that the missile has a range of over 2,150 kilometers and a top speed equivalent to 16 times the speed of sound.
Commenting on the Houthis’ announcement, the Israeli Defense Forces said that it was unaware of any missiles being launched from Yemen at Israel.
Warning sirens and air defenses were activated in central Israel more than once on October 22. However, this was blamed on attacks by Hezbollah from Lebanon.
Since November, the Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the United States and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
The group also launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel and shot down at least eleven American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.
The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January. Israel also launched two waves of strikes against civilian infrastructure in al-Hodeidah in July and September. However, the aerial campaign failed to deter the Houthis or degrade their capabilities.
