The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen unveiled on June 21 a new uncrewed suicide boat dubbed “Tufan-1” [Flood-1 in Arabic], amid the ongoing confrontation in the Red Sea with the United States and its allies over the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.
The boat was clearly named after the October 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel, codenamed Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, which started the war.
The Tufan-1 is armed with a warhead weighing 150 kg and has a top speed of 35 nautical miles, according to the Houthis, who said that the highly-maneuverable boat was designed to attack nearby moving and static vessels as well as naval facilities.
Test footage released by the Houthis showed the boat sinking a small vessel near the Yemeni coast. In the footage, the boat is seen first with a driver.
During the war with Saudi Arabia, the Houthis pioneered the use of uncrewed suicide boats, launching several attacks against warships of the Kingdom and its allies.
Since last November, the Houthis have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in response to the Israeli war and siege on Gaza.
In addition, the group launched dozens of drones and missiles at the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat and shot down six American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.
One of the group latest successful attacks was carried out using uncrewed suicide boats. The Tutor, a Liberian flagged, Greek owned and operated bulk cargo carrier, was struck by two boats in the Red Sea on June 12. The vessel was abandoned by its crew shortly after the attack. By June 18, it had completely sunk.
The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January in an attempt to deter the group and degrade its offensive capabilities, but to no avail.
Earlier this month, the Houthis unveiled a new solid-fuel ballistic missile dubbed “Palestine,” confirming that their capabilities are still growing.

if they can damage the ships propeller then they become useless since the us air craft can only take of from a moving air craft carrier. not sure if the ski jump carriers of the brits and french act in the same way.
