The Houthis (Ansar Allah) said on November 8 that they were behind a missile attack on Israel as well as the downing of a United States military drone over Yemen.
A Palestine-2 hypersonic ballistic missile was launched by the group from Yemen at Nevatim Air Base in Israel’s Negev desert, Houthi military spokesman Brigade General Yahya Sarea said in a statement, noting that the missile “reached its target.”
The spokesman also said that an MQ-9 Reaper combat drone of the U.S. military was shot down by the group while it was conducting “hostile operations” over the northern Yemeni province of al-Jawf.
“Thus, the number of American aircraft that the Yemeni air defenses have succeeded in shooting down of this type has risen to twelve aircraft during the Battle of the Promised Victory,” Brig. Gen. Sarea said.
“The Yemeni Armed Forces, with the help of God Almighty, continue to support the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples by imposing a naval blockade on the Israeli enemy, as well as by conducting military support operations and confronting all hostile threats,” the spokesman continued.
“These operations will not stop until the aggression and the blockade on the Gaza Strip, as well as the aggression on Lebanon are over,” he added.
In the morning, the Israeli Defense Forces said that air defenses intercepted a missile that was launched from Yemen at Israeli territories. Prior to the announcement, warning sirens sounded in parts of the Dead Sea, Arava desert and Negev regions in southern Israel.
Separately, a number of videos posted to social networks confirmed that a drone was shot down by the Houthis over al-Jawf.
The U.S. military acknowledged the videos circulating online. According to the Associated Press, the military said it was investigating the incident, declining to elaborate further.
Since November of last year, the Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked more than 200 vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in response to the Israeli wars on Gaza and Lebanon.
The group also launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel and shot down at least 12 American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.
In response, the U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January. Israel also launched two waves of strikes against civilian infrastructure in al-Hodeidah in July and September.
Despite killing dozens of Yemeni people, including civilians, the aerial campaign failed to deter the Houthis or degrade their capabilities.
