Iran Accuses U.S. of Striking Fishing Boats After Tanker Incidents in Hormuz (Videos)

Iran on October 31 accused the United States of striking two fishing boats south of Qeshm Island, leaving two fishermen missing and at least one injured, in an incident that threatens to reignite war.

Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB, citing an official in Hormozgan province, reported that U.S. forces attacked the two boats. Meanwhile, the semi-official Fars News Agency separately reported that an “enemy” drone struck the vessels, leaving two fishermen missing and two others injured.

The incident came a day after the Islamic Republic announced a series of maritime incidents and operations in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy said four oil tankers caught fire and exploded after striking naval mines while attempting to navigate routes Tehran considers unauthorized. Iran’s Navy also announced that it had destroyed an enemy unmanned surface vessel operating east of the strait.

The U.S. military’s Central Command rejected the Islamic Republic’s claim that it had destroyed an American unmanned surface vessel.

The latest incident also comes amid mounting indications that the U.S. and Israel are preparing for another round of military operations against Iran. U.S. officials have warned regional allies to prepare for possible renewed strikes after the November 3 U.S. midterm elections, although President Donald Trump has not made a final decision on military action, according to diplomats cited by The Associated Press.

The reported attack on civilian fishing boats could further increase the risk of a wider confrontation, especially if Tehran responds militarily to what it considers a deliberate attack on its civilians.
