A least 17 pro-government fighters were killed when ISIS cells ambushed their convoy in the eastern Homs countryside on October 8.

According to ISIS news agency, Amaq, the ambush took place north of the key town of al-Sukhnah. The terrorist group’s fighters targeted the convoy with an improvised explosive device (IED) then attacked it with machine guns and other light weapons.

“As a result of the ambush and the IED explosion, at least 17 soldiers and fighters of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its loyalist militias were killed, 7 vehicles were damaged and 3 others were captured by the fighters of the Islamic State [ISIS],” Amaq quoted a source in ISIS as saying.

Pro-government sources acknowledged all the losses. According to the sources, ten of the casualties were fighters of the National Defense Forces (NDF) and the rest were personnel of Liwa al-Quds.

ISIS terrorists likely came from the Homs desert, which is located south of al-Sukhnah. Hundreds of the terrorist group’s personnel are reportedly hiding in the region.

In the last few months, ISIS stepped up its attacks in eastern Homs and western Deir Ezzor in what appears to be an attempt to expand its influence in central Syria.
