Russia And Ukraine Launched Large Prisoner Exchange

On January 31, a large prisoner exchange took place between Russia and Ukraine. Russia has returned 195 servicemen from Ukrainian captivity, handing over 195 POWs to Ukraine. The Russian Ministry of Defense declared that the United Arab Emirates provided humanitarian mediation for the exchange.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that the exchange took place according to the formula “195 to 195”. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that Kiev had returned 207 military and civilians. Probably, in addition to 195 members of the Ukrainian formations, 12 more civilians were transferred. However, it is also possible that Zelensky provided fake numbers in an attempt to claim another media victory.

Russian officials summed up that in total, 443 Russian servicemen were returned from Ukrainian captivity in January 2024. The last exchange on January 31 was reportedly that largest one. At the same time, there are 10 more Ukrainian POWs in Russia then Russian prisoners in Ukraine. That’s why Kiev is trying its best to sabotage the ongoing exchanges, which resumed in January 2024 after about six months pause.

The previous exchange was supposed to take place on January 24, but Ukrainian forces shot doen the IL-76 with 65 Ukrainian POWs onboard. On January 31, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that the investigation revealed that the aircraft was shot down by US-made Patriot system from the Kharkiv region.

After the incident, the warring sides exchanged bodies of dead servicemen. On January 26, the Coordination Headquarters for Prisoners of War of Ukraine reported that the AFU returned the bodies of 77 dead Ukrainian soldiers. In his turn, Russian First Deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, confirmed that Russia returned the bodies of 55 of Russian servicemen. The negotiations were reportedly conducted for a long time with the assistance of the Red Cross.
