Russian air defenses intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones and projectiles during the Russian presidential elections, which started on March 15 and ended on March 17, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced on March 20.
The Kiev regime used “terrorist methods” of pressure against Russian citizens, the minister said, noting that the Ukrainian shelling targeted stations and state institutions where only civilians were present.
“This was known both to the AFU [Armed Forces of Ukraine] commanding officers and to their Western advisors,” he added.
Shoigu said that the Russian military tightened the protection of government and social facilities and reinforced air defense systems during the elections.
“During the election events, 419 unmanned aerial vehicles and 67 projectiles have been shot down,” he revealed.
The minister also said that all recent Ukrainian infiltration attempts in the Russian regions of Belgorod and Kursk were foiled by the Russian military.
The most intensive attacks targeted the settlement of Kozinka in Belgorod, according to the ministry, who revealed that more than 3,500 Ukrainian troops were killed or wounded while taking parts in these suicide operations.
“The AFU losses in the area of state border covering groups amounted to more than 3,500, more precisely 3,501 people, including 790 non-recoverable casualties over the past eight days. Twenty-three tanks, 34 armored vehicles including 11 Bradley, five Vampire MLRS launchers, and one Mi-8 helicopter have been neutralized,” Shoigu.
The minister said that the measures taken by the Russian military saved the lives of hundreds of people and ensured that the voting process went on.
According to him, 1.5 million troops and civilian personnel of the Russian military voted in the election, with an unprecedented turnout of 99.8%.
President Vladimir Putin, who secured an easy win in the elections with more than 87% of votes, warned that Russia will punish Ukraine for the attacks and that he might carve a buffer zone from more Ukrainian territory as a defensive measure.
“The primary task is to guarantee security. There are different methods here, they aren’t easy but we will do this,” Putin told a Kremlin meeting on March 19.
All in all, it appears that Ukrainian attempts to disturb the Russian presidential elections have not only failed, but also backfired.
