The Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet has began using a turret originally developed by the Tula-based Instrument Design Bureau (KBP) for an upgraded version of the Soviet-era BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle to hunt down Ukrainian uncrewed suicide boats.
The turret, dubbed Berezhok, is armed with 2A42 30 mm automatic cannon, PKTM 7.62 mm machine gun, AG-30M 30 mm automatic grenade launcher as well as two Kornet-M anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) launchers with two missiles per each. It is also equipped with the day/night sights SOZh-TM.
Video footage posted to social networks on June 14 showed a Berezhok turret destroying three Ukrainian uncrewed suicide boats with Kornet-M ATGMs.
The Kornet-M, also developed by KBP, is guided by laser-beam riding and has a range of eight to ten kilometers, depending on the version.
Kiev forces has been attacking the warships of the Black Sea Fleet and ports in the Crimean Peninsula with uncrewed suicide boats since the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine more than two years ago. Western-made components, like the Starlink satellite internet terminal, are key components of these boats.
Previousely, the Black Sea Fleet used its patrol boats, fighter jets and helicopters to intercept Ukrainian uncrewed suicide boats.
It is still unclear if the fleet has installed Berezhok turrets on its patrol boats, larger warships or on static points around Crimea’s key ports.
Overall, the turret with its Korent-M ATGMs will for sure be a more effective way to neutralize the threat posed by uncrewed suicide boats.
