On December 14, the Saudi-led coalition announced that it had intercepted four suicide drones over Yemen without providing any further details.
The drones, which were launched by the Houthis (Ansar Allah), were likely shot down by fighter jets of the Royal Saudi Air Force with air-to-air missiles.
In response to the failed drone attack, Saudi-led coalition fighter jets carried out early on December 15 a series of airstrikes on alleged targets of the Houthis in the district of Az’zal which is located to the east of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.
According to the coalition, the targets included four secret drone depots and two caves where ballistic missiles were being stored. No casualties were reported.
“The operation was carried out in accordance with the international humanitarian law and its customary rules,” the coalition said in a statement shared by the Saudi Press Agency.
The Saudi-led coalition stepped up its airstrikes on Sanaa and other Houthi-held areas in Yemen in the last few weeks in a bid to neutralize the group’s offensive capabilities. However, this goal has not been achieved, yet. The Houthis continue to launch drone and missile attacks at the Kingdom and its proxies in Yemen
