Senior Free Syrian Army Commander Reconciles With Syrian Government In Southern Syria

Fighters of the Omari Brigades in northern Daraa

On June 22, the Russian Centre for the Reconciliation of Opposing Sides in Syria announced in an official statement that a group of fighters of the US-backed Omari Brigades led by commander Wajdi Abu Thlaith had defected and reconciled with the Damascus government.

Syrian pro-government activists said that more than one hundred fighters of the US-backed Omari Brigades defected with Abu Thlaith in the southern governorate of Daraa.

According to the Russian Reconciliation Center, Abu Thlaith and his group handed over their positions in the villages of Dama and Chyah in the northeastern Daraa countryside to the Syrian Arab Army (SAA). The former FSA fighters also vowed to fight the former branch of al-Qaeda – Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) – and ISIS in southern Syria along with the SAA.

BBC journalist Riam Dalati revealed that Abu Thlaith attended very important talks with Russia in the Jordanian city of Irbid in October of 2017. Furthermore, several Syrian opposition actives accused the former FSA commander of working with Hezbollah and the Syrian intelligence earlier this year.

More fighters and commanders of the FSA in southern Syria will likely join the reconciliation process in the upcoming days, especially that the SAA is about to launch a large scale military operation there.

We do tend to have that affect Richard :)

This is Great News. It improves morale within the SAA while also undermining the the Yanki Zionist Rats.

Syrians and their allies are crumbling the US plots of expansion in Syria and in surrounding countries.

Siegfried

Who knows in what a “deal” PUTIN-Bibi is this included, too….. They would have been f*cked anyway.

Rob

Yes they have fu©ked US and UK politicians and their trillions of dollars.

Whatever little sabotage US and Israel did they’re not going to return the declining morale. Not with the Trump flip-flops statement not with the chicken-ratting way US supported them.

So long as the Arabs fight tribe against tribe, so long will they be a little people, a silly people – greedy, barbarous, and cruel, as you are.(TE Lawrence)

S Melanson

Actually you are quoting Peter-O-Toole playing the character of T.E. Lawrence in the movie Lawrence of Arabia.

The real T.E. Lawrence never said this. And it would have come across rather silly to be lecturing Arabs about infighting while WWI rages on in Europe.

Siegfried

THE REAL Lawrence was a British spy and BOUGHT THE ARABS with GOLD and WEAPONS. He didn’t have to SAY IT, he just THOUGHT it and acted according to this judgement.

S Melanson

Bought with gold and weapons… some things never change. See my response to Casey below.

Gregory Casey

Peter O’Toole was an extremely smart Irish Actor who knew and read the Characters he played in every film he made and in every Stage Play he appeared in. Being Irish, he appreciated and understood more than most the perfidious nature of British behavior in the Levant, mirroring, as it did, and continues to mirror, British behavior in Ireland throughout 800 years of attempted conquest, settlement theft of land and property and plunder of a Nation’s riches, all eventually failing and failing utterly. As with Ireland, Little Britain’s post-Colonial plans for the Levant and for Syria, Palestine and the Arabian Peninsula, including Yemen will wither and did. They are incapable of succeeding with their “Shopkeeper-Alliance” with Riyadh, Jerusalem, Washington & that other post-Colonial failed Nation-State HQ’d in Paris.

S Melanson

Agreed. T.E. Lawrence was an archeologist in northern Syria for many rears and got to understand the culture and mindsets of the region which had a medieval quality. The British at first assigned a minor role but eventually recognized the value Lawrence’s knowledge brought to the table. Lawrence would be torn between loyalties as a British officer and as Faisel’s Right hand man fighting the Ottomans. There is a lot of debate about this extraordinarily complex man that ranges from hero to traitor, to greater than life to charlaton. He is all those things which caused him to be very conflicted.

Lawrence may well have thought what O-Toole said, but he would also juxtapose this sentiment with what he saw as the morally bankrupt colonial policies of the British. Quite a few in the Cairo Colonial office were sympathetic of Lawrence and overlooked actions that advanced the interests of the Arabs such as Lawrence leading the seizure of Aqaba and informing Faisal privately of being betrayed and the existence of Sykes-Picot – this alone could have resulted in Lawrence being put before a firing squad but British intelligence in Cairo shielded him as they too were disgusted by the betrayal.

The leadership may have been bereft of morality, but the rank and file maintained some decency and undermined the British plan to screw the Arabs as the Arabs paid in blood to weaken the Ottomans. This is another story of hope for humanity as there is a core sense of justice within us that stubbornly will not be extinguished.

Lawrence believed, and correctly, the Arabs would pay today for British betrayal, but Britain would pay for their acts tomorrow, and pay very dearly.

William Carrington

Lawrences’ death was too convenient .

John Mason

So how many defected? 10? 100? Quantity does matter in this situation, the more the merrier the less is ineffective. Personally wouldn’t trust the FSA they have been involved with Turkey/US and possibly Israel for far too long and they could be setting a trap.

Elisabeth Jenders

I rather think that, because they have been involved with these rogue states and learned they are just useful idiots for them, they’ve had enough of them and reconnect with someone who has proven to be trustworthy. After all, it’s their home country.

Siegfried

it’s their home country” And how many of them are Chtchnia & Dagestan-scvmbags, Turkmen, Tadjiks or Uigurs (CHINA)?

Elisabeth Jenders

Let’s leave it up to the SAA to check this. They know their own, surely be able to sense danger, and will be careful before admitting them into their ranks!

Brother Ma

Exactly! I believe a significant number are not even Syrians.

jorge

100 fighters.

John Mason

Very good Jorge!!

jorge

That information was in almasdar news, I think that yesterday.

Smaug

During the 30 Years War there were also incidents of towns switching sides by virtue of the commander accepting a bribe. . It seams the only difference between pro and anti government militias is simply what side they say they’re on. And since these form the backbone of the security forces of both sides an image of a Praetorium Guard acting as a paramilitary force within a paramilitary force comes to mind.

Richard M

No need to look that far back. As recently as 2014 towns across Anbar Province Iraq chose to join ISIS, since ISIS looked to be a safe bet to win!!! :D

Merijn

Isn’t it better to keep your mouth shut that you are in a Reconciliation-Program and just pretend that you are still fighting against Assad…? Saves a trip to the frontline….just start shootin’

Richard M

There is propaganda value. If more gangs begin to desert the momentum builds on itself and resistance collapses, like East Ghouta! :D

US-Navy Revert Shia

Good Advice, how have you been partner-?

Good my Brother.. and you? Everything seems to go fine in Syria… Except for this ISIS-AIRFORCE taking a shit here and there….need Mo’ Missiles….shoot a couple of’m Down.. Tag’m & Bag’m

US-Navy Revert Shia

Yes Indeed….

Good news. I will take it.

Richard M

This is just the beginning in Daraa! Soon these former Orcs will be rehabilitated and helping to hunt and kill Daesh and Qaida. With their experience and knowledge of Orc tactics and fortifications, they will be a valuable help in bringing this war to an end! :D

Willing Conscience (The Truths

It sounds good but the truth is these guys are as likely to defect and join their brothers in Aleppo and Idlib as soon and they think they’re able to, probably killing a few SAA on the way. Let’s see where Assad sends them, I’ll bet it won’t be the front lines in Idlib or Aleppo to fight HTS. I wouldn’t even trust them enough to send them to Dier ez-Zor to fight Isis to be honest. Looks nice on paper but in reality I think they’d be more trouble than they’re worth, it would have been far better for the SAA to ignore their offer and to have just simply bombed them into oblivion.

Pave Way IV

“…but the truth is these guys are as likely to defect and join their brothers in Aleppo and Idlib as soon and they think they’re able to…”

Or maybe they’re just tired of killing/being killed by their neighbors and fellow Syrians for a regime-change that will fix nothing and seems to serve the interests of the US and Israel far more than theirs. Or maybe they figure they would rather endure their imperfect government in Damascus rather then have it replaced with enlightened Wahhabi fanatics and an al Qaeda/CIA-based state police. Or worse yet, a US/Israeli/Saudi-backed Ukrainian-style ‘democracy’.

There’s a difference between the Syrian guy that just wants to get up in the morning, go to work and come back home for a meal with his family, and a Syrian homicidal fanatic that still believes foreign-funded regime-change at any cost will fix everything in Syria. The US fully-intended to fuel its scheme in Syria by making these two groups indistinguishable in ‘rebel-held’ areas to make support for al Qaeda/FSA seem far greater than it actually was.

Syria has successfully unfucked this situation with the Russian-led reconciliation process. The FSA commander did not ‘make and offer’ – he agreed to a negotiated reconciliation that worked everywhere else in Syria. Syrian citizens in rebel-held areas are not ‘more trouble than they’re worth’. ‘Bombing them to oblivion’ is the exact kind of simplistic solution the psychopathic Israeli-firster US neocon Deep State would use against its own people to eliminate dissent – with the predictable failure and creation of even more dissent. If you can’t see that, then you can’t possibly understand the subtle genius of the reconciliation process.

Willing Conscience (The Truths

You show a remarkable lack of understanding if you believe that. The Syrian people you are rightfully advocate for, haven’t been allowed to do the exact same thing you also rightfully advocate for, because the FSA fighters you’re now advocating for haven’t allowed them to. And in case you find that hard to understand I’ll make it even simpler. For the last 12 months the FSA and it’s member groups have refused to join the de-escalation agreement and adhere to a ceasefire. Not only did they refuse to join the process themselves, they actively tried to stop any other groups from doing so. They’ve been fighting, intimidating and assassinating anyone that even tried to negotiate with Assad and over the last 12 months, which has made all the other anti Assad factions hate them even more than they do Assad. Why do you think Assad’s been allowed to start this operation in the first place, it’s because the SFA and the Druze want him to come in and clean out the FSA, they are the problem. They’re the group that was always being accused of collaborating with Isis, by not only Assad himself, but also some of the other anti Assad factions as well. The FSA member groups in this area are even more similar to Isis in their religious ideology than their brothers in Idlib and Aleppo. Early on in this war some of the earliest reports of atrocious behaviour came from these areas, and it was this group, the FSA that was committing them. Now when the murderers have no chance of winning, no friends they can depend on for support, and absolutely nowhere to run to, they want to give up and reconcile, it’s way too late for that mate. A leopard can’t change his spots. You might think it’s safe to let a child molester come to live in your home and baby sit your kids when they get out on parole, but the Syrian people that have seen the way these guys operate, would feel the same way I do, bomb them into oblivion. You’re right to advocate for reconciliation and forgiveness, but the group you’re advocating for doesn’t, they cut your head of with a knife and stick it on a pole as a warning to others if they can’t get what they want, or just to send a message.

“BBC journalist Riam Dalati revealed that Abu Thlaith attended very important talks with Russia” Hmm. Are the Russians and Brits Making some kind of a deal over the large chunk of land center Southern Syria?

It is in Russians interest to bleed the brits for as long as possible. Hmmm…

Willing Conscience (The Truths

Never ever, you’ll see a mushroom cloud over Al-Tanf before you see a title deed and a Saudi gas pipeline.

William Carrington

Meanwhile back in Ukraine…oh sorry , am l too early ?

Willing Conscience (The Truths

This is going even faster than I anticipated, a 3 to 4 month operation is starting to look like a 2 month operation after only 2 days of fighting, I love being wrong sometimes. Smart move by this FSA group, they know there’s nowhere to escape to here in these, ethnically, religiously, and politically segregated enclaves that welcome no one but their own. They also know there’s no green buses for a safe trip to Idlib or Aleppo, unlike their lucky brothers in Hama, Homs and Damascus, they don’t have anything left to bargain with, so can’t afford the bus ride, so sad. Butchers knives bullets and bombs are the only rewards they’ll get for their obstinance when the SAA eventually turn up on their doorsteps, they’ll make really good fertilizer for the olive trees. The pompous twit [Pompeo] visiting the dwarf king [Abdullah] is a bit of a worry though. King Abdullah has been instrumental in keeping the peace here for the last 12 months, and has successfully helped Assad and the SFA to come to some type of arrangement that has allowed and encouraged this new offensive by Assad. Hopefully this visit by Pompeo won’t change anything, but I’m still worrying the US will force him to do something stupid if they can, after all they do have quite a hold on this little fellow, and can squeeze him pretty hard when they want to.

Brother Ma

You reckon? Well if the Dwarf Abdullah has done good he has done it too little and too late. The cur was instrumental in causing rebels to invade and slaughter in Southern Syria!

Willing Conscience (The Truths

Yes he was responsible for some of the early mayhem but in his defence, he only ever backed very moderate groups. If it wasn’t for him the US would still be funding the head chopping FSA, but he was the real reason they stopped. As much as he’s done wrong in the past, he’s now in a position that allows him to at least partially make up for that error in judgment, and so far he seems to be doing so. I’m in no real position to judge anything, but if the bulk of the Syrian population think somethings a good idea, I’ll generally tend to always agree with them, they aren’t screaming murdering dwarf anymore so I’m not either [I used to].

Brother Ma

Good synopsis and reasoning. I hope you are right about that Dwarf!

It appears we at last have some encouraging news
