Russian air defenses repelled a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack that targeted the Crimean Peninsula, Sea of Azov and four other regions over the night of June 6 and 7.
In a statement, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that 28 drones were shot down by air defenses. 11 drones were intercepted over Crimea, eight over the Sea of Azov, six over the region of Krasnodar, two over the region of Belgorod and one over the region of Rostov.
Material losses were reportedly in Rostov, where Governor Vasily Golubev said that the Novoshakhtinsky Oil Refinery was hit by a drone. The strike led to a fire that was later put down. There were no reports of any casualties in the region.
An oil depot in the Stary Oskol urban district of Belgorod was also hit. As a result of an explosion, one of the tanks caught fire. There were no casualties. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. The blast wave blew out the windows in the security building, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said.
Ukraine intensified drone attacks on Russian territory in recent months, damaging civilian infrastructure and wounding or killing dozens of Russian civilians.
The main aim of these repeated Ukrainian attacks is apparently to make up for the never ending failures of Kiev forces on the battlefield.
The Russian military resumed large-scale group strikes against military and energy infrastructure in Ukraine last March in response to these attacks. Despite inflicting heavy damage, this was not enough to deter the Kiev regime. Thus, the Russian military launched last month a ground operation in the Kharkiv region.
